Unreliable Antipodean Telly

Australia’s Channel Nine has been voted the most "unreliable" television network in the country

Seems like their reputation has finally caught up with Channel 9.Punctuality isn't everything in life but I used to hope against hope that at least the 6pm news would actually start at 6pm.Fat chance quite often. Apparently the state funded ABC (affectionately referred to as 'Aunty' in the same way as the BBC used to be in the UK) was named the most reliable Australian network. Channel 9 seem to be in a place akin to ITV in the UK where its best days are perhaps behind it.

I often dream of having a basement or slotting a new floor underneath our infuriating nano home

From Earth across the sky

A wide shot of a variety of clouds and contrails in the late evening sky. Almost looks like one of those 'Earth from space' pics.

Bad analogue is in demand

Around 8-9 years ago I bought a Kodak KE60 compact 35mm camera. They were never sold in the UK but were widely sold in North America and Australia. It was a heavy wide angle glass lensed compact camera with an auto film loading mechanism which meant you never had to open the back of the camera (it loaded via a small side loading bay). I sold it on quite quickly as I couldn't stand the light falloff and vignetting of the pictures. These days cameras that take distinct 'bad' analogue looking pictures are very 'in' whether via the ludicrously expensive original Lomo LC-A (I bought one way back when for £25 and these days the same pocket tank costs hundreds of Euros), the toy Holga or the Vivitar ultra wide and slim and its clones.
So 35mm film is being treasured for its faults. This happened for a while with Super 8mm cine film which was used for a while for shooting pop videos because of the very distinctive look. These days that super 8 look can be applied to progressive scanned video in post processing. No doubt the current vogue for Lo-Fi still pictures will increasingly be available as an extra function on a digital camera as film stock and processing prices slowly increase over time.

The Last British Telly

The last truly British manufactured television was probably some years ago but today the last television set to be made on British soil will leave the Toshiba factory in Plymouth. The Beeb take us through a quick look at some classic British television set designs. It's design that Britain at least still has a foothold in particularly Jonathan Ive's iconic designs for many Apple products.

Eating Off The Test Card

It's rare to see the TV test-card pop up on the box these days (it's gone the way of teletext, VHS recorders and simulcasts). So much so that other than its brief resurrection and update on BBC HD it looks like its been relegated to technical nostalgia with this proposed test-card plate design. Be sure to play the best cheesy muzak when in use.

Dreamt I worked for an inept politician

He drove his car to a commercial firm who locked us in an industrial plant and sprayed us with toxic and corrosive chemicals (nice welcome). I escaped however the treatment for this chemical exposure involved painful skin peeling chemicals in itself. Later (could have been years, who knows) a secretary tried to frame me by getting me to sign incriminating documents which I refused to do not just because I was aware of what she was doing but also because I could no longer hold a pen.

Sometimes a bland good feeling dream would be welcome.
